Cyber Cafés
There are Internet cyber cafés all around Europe, most guide books will list one nearby.

Alternatively, you can pick them out before you leave via websites.

cybercaptive.com and www.cybercafe.com both seem reasonable options for pre-trip planning.

I use cyber cafés often to catch up on personal email, US news, upcoming weather and just to take a breather, relax, and recharge with a cappuccino while I'm at it.

Sign up for a free web-based email account such as Hotmail or Yahoo! just for the trip. Or visit www.fepg.net for a list of free email account providers, and you are guaranteed to be able to keep everyone up to speed on your fabulous life.

You'll also want to consider emailing any itinerary changes to some responsible person back home in case of emergencies.

It's fun to stay in touch with the homeland and it keeps the phone bills down. In fact, I don't bother calling home from Europe unless I'm gone for more than a couple of weeks.

Of course, now there are cheap cell phones you can rent when going to Europe... :-) See the Communications section for more information.

"Thanks so much for all the information and advice, you've given me a thorough idea of how to be streetwise, better than travel guidebooks."
